Invasive Species Environment Technician 

(Temporary Full Time)

The Boundary Invasive Species Society is now accepting resumes for a summer position in the  Boundary for a 16-week term from May through August. If you’re an enthusiastic, motivated self-starter  who can work well with a team or individually, then this position is for you! 

POSITION: Invasive Species Environmental Field Services Technician  Employer: Boundary Invasive Species Society  

Term: May 8, 2023 to August 18, 2023 (tentative – will depend on when funding confirmed) Office Location: Rock Creek, BC 

Work Location: Within the Boundary area which includes Electoral Areas C, D & E within the Regional  District of Kootenay Boundary.  

OVERVIEW: 

The Boundary Invasive Species Society (BISS) operates an invasive species program through the summer.  The program covers the geographic area of the Kettle River watershed commonly referred to as  Boundary Country. BISS focuses on public education, the inventory and monitoring of invasive species  sites, providing information to landowners, control of invasives via biological control agents and manual  treatments. The society is part of the Boundary Habitat Stewards and works in cooperation with the  environmental non-profits on riparian restoration projects. 

Work Tasks and Responsibilities:  

  • Monitor locations of priority invasive species. 
  • Support maintenance of digital data collection using ArcGIS online. 
  • Collect, monitor, and release biological control agents. 
  • Manual removal of invasive plants in priority locations. 
  • Support delivery of a region-wide awareness program for invasive species to support agricultural  producers, landowners, and Boundary recreationists. 
  • Maintenance work on ongoing riparian restoration projects that were established to promote  stewardship and improve habitat for species at risk. Tasks will include watering, planting, fence  repair, survival monitoring, etc. on existing project sites that are located throughout the  Boundary in cooperation with other environmental non-profits in the area. 
  • Office-related tasks as needed.  
  • Manage term project. 

Mandatory Eligibility Requirements:  

To be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, individuals must:  be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; 

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been  conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the  employment; and, 
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work  in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Provisos / Special Requirements:  

  • A valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence and be willing to provide a driver’s abstract. Must be willing to travel on unpaved (unmaintained) roads. 
  • Will be required to use personal vehicle for travel and will compensated for mileage (mileage log required). 
  • Required to work a flexible 40-hour work week (with some evenings and weekends) for the full  16-week term. The term may be shortened depending on available funding.  
  • Must provide their own personal outdoor work gear, this includes items such as: sturdy work  boots, rain gear, and sun protection. Personal protective safety gear will be provided by the  employer as required for any specialized tasks.  
  • Have completed or be pursuing a post-secondary education in the natural sciences or have work  experience in natural applied science fields.  

Preferred Experience:  

  • Previous experience working outdoors in all weather conditions (volunteer or paid). Knowledge of flora and fauna of the Southern Interior of British Columbia.  
  • Experience with invasive species identification and management.  
  • Experience with field data collection; GIS experience.  

Rate of Pay: 

$20 to $21 per hour depending on experience, plus 4% holiday pay.
