The Boundary Invasive Species Society is now accepting resumes for a summer position in the Boundary for a 16-week term. The successful applicant will work with a team of like-minded individuals to deliver a region-wide invasive species program.

OVERVIEW:
The Boundary Invasive Species Society operates an invasive species program during the summer coordinating the management of invasive species throughout the Boundary. The program covers the geographic area of the Kettle River watershed, commonly referred to as the Boundary. The program outline consists of public education, inventory, and monitoring of invasive species sites, on ground control (biological control agents and manual treatments), and restoration projects.
Work Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Conduct monitoring for invasive species on utility corridors, public land, and roadsides
• Identify and monitor locations of priority invasive species
• Support digital data collection using ArcGIS Field Maps
• Support education at events and information booth as well as social media updates
• Hand pull, cut, and dig invasive plants in priority locations
• Support delivery of a region wide awareness program for invasive species
• Maintenance work on ongoing riparian restoration projects that promote stewardship and improved habitat for species at risk
• Office related tasks as needed
• Manage term project
Requirements for Position:
• A valid BC Driver’s License; must be willing to provide a driver’s abstract
• Must be willing to travel on unpaved/unmaintained roads
• Will be required to use personal vehicle for travel; compensation for mileage will be provided at industry standard (mileage log required)
• Required to work a flexible 40-hour work week (occasional weekend events) for the full 16-week term. The term may be shortened depending on funding available and funding approval date
• Must provide their own personal outdoor work gear, such as: sturdy work boots, rain gear, and sun protection. Personal protective safety gear and tools will be provided by the employer as required for any specialized tasks
Preferred Experience:
• Previous experience working outdoors in all weather conditions (either volunteer or paid) • Knowledge of flora and fauna of the Southern Interior of British Columbia
• Experience with invasive species identification and management
• Experience doing field data collection and training in ArcGIS
• Have completed or be pursuing a post-secondary education in the natural sciences, or have work experience in natural applied science fields
Mandatory Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, individuals must:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
• have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. Rate of Pay: $21 to $22 per hour depending on experience, plus 4% holiday pay.
