I’ve been checking with local organizations who provide emergency food supply to see how they are managing with supply and keeping their opening schedule. Things are not going well for them at this time:
– The usual flow of food from supermarkets to food banks has been affected by increased purchasing by the broader community – there hasn’t been much unsold food to pass on
– The need is increasing as more people are not able to go to work
Note that health authorities are recommending that emergency food providers continue to operate, with adaptations for the virus.
A Food Security Network from across the Boundary has been in place since 2015. These organizations collaborate on a weekly basis to share food across the network I am very concerned about whether these organizations will be able to continue to operate without our support. I urge those of us whose income hasn’t been affected to donate to our local organizations:
Kettle River Food Share Society (Food Share): 3990 Hwy 3, Rock Creek, BC V0H 1Y0
Beaverdell Community Club: Box 114, Beaverdell, BC V0H 1A0 (they can give a tax receipt)
King of Kings Church: Box 3, Midway, BC V0H 1M0 (they can give a tax receipt)
Greenwood Food Bank: Box 3, Midway, BC V0H 1M0
Boundary Food Bank in Grand Forks (they also serve West Boundary residents); there is a DONATE button on their website: boundarycommunityfoodbank.ca(they can give tax receipt)
Please note on the cheque that the donation is for food security.
Sincerely,
Vicki Gee
